This summer festival, often referred to as the Fun Fest, began in the fall of 1980, when employees and board members of the Fun Festr of Commerce held an annual weekend meeting to discuss extremely important issues. At this time, staff and the board spotted many situations that tend to divide the community-from political issues (such as mergers, alcohol, etc.) to extreme and unhealthy competition between local high schools. Noting these issues, the organization seeks to create a project that will build a more positive attitude between the Kingsport community and a more friendly nature of the residents. In 1981, the founder proposed the theme of "community solidarity".
