Back in the 1950s, Warren Wallace, a local farmer and Alcoa employee, opened a small truck farm in rural Badendorf. It was a small greenhouse, and there was no paved road at Devil's Valley at the time. Warren grows tomato and pepper plants and sells fresh vegetables and fruits on a small farm stand. Doug Nelson and his family bought the property and business in 1981, and expectations for Wallace are slightly higher. Under the leadership of the Nelson family, Wallaces Garden Center has grown into a year-round garden center, gift shop and state-of-the-art greenhouse. In the 1990s, Wallaces Garden Center opened three stores on both sides of the Mississippi River, and currently has two stores in Iowa.
