Hegartys has been in business since 1946, when the owner and his wife started it. It is a family business. They have grown over the years and now operate out of a 25,000-square-foot department store on upper Main Street, Buncrana, with convenient customer parking to the rear. In order to offer goods to the people of Buncrana at very affordable prices, they opened a store in 1946. Selling carpets, vinyl, fridges, furniture, and giftware—some of which they still sell today—as well as other products. Together with their wife and daughter, they expanded the shop over time, bringing in giftware and even diamond jewelry. In order to assist in expanding the shop on Main Street, they purchased a number of properties on either side of the original establishment.
