After three years in control, owners of Gateshead FC richard and Julie Bennett announced in May 2018 that they would be selling the club. The next month, they reached an agreement with a foreign group, but it eventually fell through. Gateshead FC joined the Northern Premier League as founding members in 1968, however their participation in the new league only lasted two years. Ironically, another Football League team that had been demoted, Bradford Park Avenue, took their position, forcing Gateshead to replace their own reserve team in the Wearside League. After placing second, the Tynesiders played two seasons in the Midland League before Gateshead AFC went out of business in 1973, seven leagues and 43 years after it was founded. The next year, a brand-new team called Gateshead Town competed in the neighborhood Northern Combination League, but amazingly, history would soon repeat itself.
