Gate Theatre was founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheál Mac Liammóir.. In 1983, Michael Colgan served as the boarding gate director. In the year that Dublin became the European Capital of Culture in 1991, Gatman collaborated with RTÉ and Trinity College Dublin to perform all 19 stage plays of Samuel Beckett in three weeks . The festival was later re-held in London and New York. The celebration of Beckett's work is fitting because the gate is the home of the Irish premiere of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" in 1956, and the dramatic revival of 1988 directed by Walter Asmus. During this period, with the generous support of funders, under the guidance of Ronnie Tallon and Tallon Walker architect Scott Ron, the structure of the Gate Theatre building was restored and renovated.
