The mission of Animal Ark is to inspire environmental management through wildlife education. Since 1981, it has provided a haven for injured, abandoned and other unreleased wildlife. The ark, located on 38 acres north of Reno, is dominated by predatory animals native to North America, although a few alien species have been found in the area. By offering special program-making activities and educational Tours, Animal Ark educates thousands of children and adults each year about ecological principles and wildlife. It made great efforts to build each animal enclosure with native trees, boulders and vegetation to mimic natural habitat. These animals receive activities to help combat boredom. For example, the food of black bears is spread around the enclosure to stimulate the gathering instinct. At several special events open to the public, the animals dine among toys that require thought and skill to open.
